For years scientists and researchers have studied how humans have interacted and dealt with the various pressures and tensions that come with living. Our body’s response to these pressures is called stress, and the individual pressures and tensions that cause stress are called stressors. There are two kinds of stressors: physical and psychological. Logically, physical stressors are things that directly affect our body, whether it be temperature, injury, or chronic pain, and psychological stressors are any events, individuals, or situations that you register as negative. The way that your body reacts to stressors and induced stress is called a stress response, and these can manifest in numerous different ways from increased heart rate to hopelessness to nausea to constant fidgeting and many, many others.

One aspect that scientists are looking into is the link between high levels of stress hormones in the body and cardiovascular disease and hypertension. When the body responds to stress it releases many different hormones to counter, or sometimes induce, stress responses. One of these hormones is cortisol which will provide a rapid increase in the body’s energy level in high-stress situations. Your body will also release the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine which have four main results:

  • constrict blood vessels to maintain blood pressure
  • increase heart rate
  • relax airway muscles
  • control the metabolism of glucose

These effects brought about by cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine are great in the short-term, potentially life-saving, but in the long-term, they can be detrimental to your health. Scientists are still looking for the direct connection between cardiovascular disease and stress, but cardiovascular diseases tend to emerge in high-stress individuals at a higher rate.

Properly managing stress can lead to improved health, mannerisms, and productivity. However, for some, managing stress still has a stigma wrapped around it.
