Myths about COVID-19 Vaccines

The New England Journal of Medicine recently published an article showing that roughly 36% of adults that have received the Covid-19 vaccination are unsure of when they are safe after being vaccinated. Furthermore, roughly 20% of adults that have received the Covid-19 vaccination believe they are safe before they’ve even received the second dose. The vaccination requires both doses and a time period of, at least, two weeks post-second dose to be fully effective. These wrong beliefs illustrate how common misinformation is about Covid-19 and the available vaccinations. To specifically combat this misinformation, the CDC has a page dedicated to addressing common myths about the Covid-19 vaccination, as well as having a page with various links addressing common concerns and questions about the Covid-19 vaccination.

One problematic belief about the Covid-19 vaccine is that, after receiving a dose, you can contract Covid-19. None of the CDC-approved vaccines contain the live virus, SARS-CoV-2 which is responsible for Covid-19. You may suffer symptoms, but this is from the vaccine teaching your immune system how to respond to Covid-19. The vaccines cannot make you sick with Covid-19.

Another problematic belief is that the Covid-19 vaccine will alter your DNA. There are two types of vaccinations available: viral vector and mRNA. Neither of these vaccinations enter a cell’s nucleus where DNA is located. Both of these vaccinations work by delivering information on how to deal with SARS-CoV-2 to your immune system. They work with your immune system naturally to defend your body from Covid-19. There is no interplay or exchange between the vaccine and your DNA.

Despite a vaccine being available, it is still important to protect yourself in the safest and best possible way. It’s necessary to have a healthy lifestyle, while keeping your immune system firing on all cylinders.
